the driveway. stairs. doors.

It had rained. So, by Wednesday the ground was a nice mush for the cement mixer to try to get through.  Papa tried to pull it the last stretch with the tractor.  But they ended up getting some flagstone under it for the tires to have some traction where the pool used to be.

I had to leave to get a haircut. So, I asked Jake to take pictures...

When I came back...Josh was finishing up.

The finished product after day 2...

We are starting to have interior doors...wow...what a concept! :)

And the finished stairs...Josh custom made these...

And, of course, Joe was having a blast playing in the pea gravel! :)

Hunting, Punting, and some exercise

This is our neighbor's dog, Basil...!  Something was in that tree b/c it woke me up during the night. Basil confirmed this by his behavior! :)

The boys were learning to and practicing their punting...

Joe wanted to show me how he was exercising.  I'm not sure if the skates were for an extra tricky workout....?!?!

Drawings, Bible costumes, and an outdoor adventure

A lady from church needed kids drawings for one of her classes she is taking.  So, the boys were to draw a picture...anything.  Amazingly, Joe actually did more than a scribble...and...he actually had interesting details I've not seen before.  So, maybe he can sit still long enough to draw something!!! :)

For school, we made Bible costumes.  Joe wanted in on the fun, too!
Jake shows off his scroll we made the first week of school.

Late in the week we went to a nearby wildlife refuge.  We enjoyed the bird viewing area.  The boys were excited to watch the birds...for quite a while.  They looked at the pictures below the window and yelled out which bird they thought they had seen.  Quite entertaining for sure!

We looked for all kinds of wildlife but only came up with a dying baby snake.  Jake wanted to rescue it by moving it to the grass (mom's job).  I used a stick...I hate snakes!  (Side note...later the same day I saw two snakes while mowing...I chased them and ran 'em over...even though I know they are good snakes!)

This week...so far...

Actually, I forgot to mention the fun that the boys had last week with homeschool activities (outside of the house).  On Wednesday we had the library class. This month was "Fire and Ice (Cream)".  They made volcanoes out of tin cans (on aluminum plates) which they covered with clay (and added a couple plastic dinosaurs).  Then, the baking soda and vinegar concoction was added for the "explosion".  They loved it...Jake was eager to do it again at home.  We haven't yet, but I told him we should do it in the sand box!   Joe did a great job following instructions and actually spread the clay over his tin can very evenly and well.  He was very intrigued by the projector that was used to project a You Tube video on the wall. "How does that work to put the picture over there?"
On Friday, we went to our friends house where we learned about Living and Non-living things.  I taught Jake's age and up (7th grade) while Joe was with the pre-school group.  While Jake participated very well in his group (very intrigued by the things under the microscope), I got word from several moms that Joe knew his living from non-living very easily and well.  Apparently the moms were going around helping kids, and Joe didn't need help...not b/c he didn't want it but b/c he knew how to do what he was doing and was doing it correctly...labeling each things living or non-living...without hesitation.  :)  Interesting to me...b/c he seems to not care.  But he soaks up so much.  Often times, Jake struggles to remember the next word of the bible verse or something we are memorizing.  Joe often will just casually say the right word Jake is trying to remember while continuing to play.   It's hilarious.

Anyway...around the house....things are two steps forward 16 back.  But there is progress.  The kitchen is in full working order...and is being fully enjoyed! Josh has mainly been working on making the stair treads (from hardwood we took out) and making risers.  So, soon we'll have real stairs.
We are trying to put the driveway in, but in the process of laying some of the water/electric out to the barn, we found a septic problem.  So, Saturday was spent digging for treasures...the tank, the break, the end of the tile, etc.  Long story short, we were more easily able to find what we were looking for b/c when we bought the place there were indicators of where the tank was and where the line may have been cut by the electric company.  That helped...but it still took all day.

Enjoy Joe's description...

And this is what we dug out and found...the electric company (prior to us purchasing the house) had cut through the septic line to lay new electric).

And...the boys (always eager to help) are given the job to measure and put filters in the vents. They were so excited...!  We started Jake on the job, but as usual...Joe listened from a distance and found a way he could help (without being asked).  So, he got vents out of the floor and brought them to Jake. And, of course, he frequently told us where they had come from and how hard the work was that he was doing! :)

Last week...

We have definitely been busy...with lots of different things.

Here...Josh is talking to Papa (who is down in the cellar) as they try to hook up the piping for the kitchen sink.  Of course, Joe crawled right into the scene and started giving his two cents.

Even though the stove was hooked up, we had problems with getting the right flow of gas through it for awhile.  But we finally got to bake...chocolate chip cookies!!!!

You will probably get tired of seeing this kind of picture.  So, I'll apologize in advance.  But, seriously, I get excited every day to watch the sunrise and the sunset.  These are all sunrise pictures.  I tried to take a couple moon rise pictures the other night with no luck...!  But needless to say, God is amazing...His creation is gorgeous!

One morning, we found that Daisy's family had stopped for an overnight visit at the Detached Garage Hotel...and had taken advantage of the breakfast bar, too.  Daisy apparently has 3 brothers and sisters.  They are mean.  We trapped 2 of them in the detached garage (jumping insulation and siding while dodging everything else in the way out there...and trying not to break the door frames).  They were very defensive.  A good lesson for the boys in the difference between wild and not wild! :)

So, Joe has learned to skip.  He suddenly showed me this last week.  I asked who taught him to skip and he said "nobody...I just got it!"  And he has...
